On 17 March 2026, partners across government, international partners, research institutions, businesses, and local practitioners came together at the Report Launch and Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Plastic Pollution and Biodiversity in Viet Nam.
The newly launched report, developed under the Global Plastic Action Partnership with support from the Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, highlights a critical reality: Plastic pollution poses a growing threat to biodiversity, ecosystem services, and socio-economic resilience. The report findings were presented by Ms Nguyen Thu Trang on behalf of the research team.
The launch welcomed the participation of Ms. Khadija Jarik (First Secretary, Embassy of Canada), Mr. Jeet Kar and Ms. Shreya Anand (GPAP/ World Economic Forum), emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and evidence-based approaches in addressing plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.
🎤 Highlights from our panelists:
• Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Thi Thuy Huong (Phenikaa University) stressed the need for stronger science-policy linkages and coordinated efforts to turn science to practice
• Mr. Do Minh Phuong (Department of Digital Transformation, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) pointed to opportunities from AI and Big Data to transform plastic pollution – biodiversity research.
• Ms. Thu-Huyen NGUYEN Thi (UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme) shared lessons on designing small-scale, meaningful financing mechanisms that can be scaled for greater impact.
• Ms. DuyenMai BuiDang (Coca-Cola Viet Nam & Cambodia) underlined the private sector’s role in reducing plastic footprints across value chains and investing in circular solutions.
• Mr. Huynh Ngoc Dien (Cu Lao Cham MPA) brought practical insights on community-based and ecosystem-based initiatives already delivering measurable impact on the ground.
The message was clear: systemic, science-based, and inclusive solutions are needed, and partnerships are key to tackle impacts of plastic pollution on biodiversity. A big thank you to all speakers and participants for driving this important conversation forward.
Let’s keep the momentum going towards a resilient future for Viet Nam💚
