The Viet Nam NPAP Secretariat joined a training workshop on “Enhancing awareness of women’s role in the informal sector in urban centers to combat marine pollution caused by plastics” organized by the University of Law, Vietnam National University in Hanoi, and the Center for the Law of the Sea and International Maritime Law (SIMLAW) with the support of UNEP. This training focused on gender equality and women’s empowerment with the involvement of the informal waste sector in managing marine plastic waste. Its highlight was a field trip to the An Phat Holding factory in Hai Duong province. During this visit, delegates gained knowledge of An Phat’s innovative technology for producing eco-packaging and compostable bags made of agricultural materials or residuals, such as cassava powder, sweet potato powder, and sugar cane chaff. The bags can completely decompose into water, CO2, and plant humus in a normal environment without requiring any chemical treatment.
