Who is Viet Nam NPAP ?
NPAP is a national led multi-stakeholder platform that enables collaboration between the government and other vital partners to turn plastic waste and pollution commitments into action. NPAP, as part of Global Plastic Action Partnership, aims to shape more sustainable and inclusive world through the eradication of plastic pollution.
Viet Nam’s challenge
Currently, each year, Vietnam generates about 22 million tons of domestic solid waste, of which about 3.7 million is plastic waste and this amount is increasing, causing many dangers to the environment. And this figure projectably increases by 36% between 2018 and 2030.

According to the forecast of international experts, the unintentional loss of plastic waste into the water environment of Vietnam is expected to increase by 106% from 2021 to 2030. Only around 10 – 15% of Viet Nam’s plastic waste is collected for recycling.

Viet Nam’s target

The NPAP Leadership Board organizes the 3rd meeting to review the results of implementing the 2023 work plan and discuss to build momentum for 2024 and other orientations for coming years.
This meeting also launches the Gender equality and Inclusivity Task Force, chaired by the Canadian Embassy in Viet Nam and co-chaired by the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) and formed with 13 members across sectors.

The Gender Context Assessment in Plastic Value Chain in Viet Nam is firstly introduced to mainstream the gender and inclusivity issues along the plastic waste management system, in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy in Viet Nam and Vietnam Women’s Union

The first NPAP task forces, focusing on innovation and Financing, was established with 12 official members from government, business, NGO and international organizations.

The second annual meeting of the NPAP Leadership Board took place in Hanoi to approve the 2023 work plan and convene multiple stakeholders and members to join force for solving plastic pollution in Viet Nam.

The Viet Nam Plastic Action Assessment and Roadmap Considerations report firstly published online on the GPAP/NPAP page before official launched to all NPAP members in the second meeting of the Leadership Board in April 2023

The partnership agreement signed between World Economic Forum (WEF) and Viet Nam Government (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment – MONRE to support Viet Nam to tackle plastic waste pollution. Particularly, MONRE committed coordinate with Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP)to gather public-private partnerships to implement meaningful initiatives and effective strategies in addressing plastic pollution and promote circular economy development in Viet Nam and in the ASEAN through policy dialogues, new partnership, and collaboration opportunities.
