The Viet Nam NPAP Innovation and Financing Task Force organized a workshop to discuss “Digital innovations to ease the work of informal waste workers (IWWs) and promote responsible sourcing”. Several women informal waste pickers were invited to share their experiences and ideas on how digital apps could support them in their work, including challenges in accessing high-tech apps or connecting with waste dealers, and further integrating into the plastic waste management system with better working conditions and insurance. Founders of VECA, Grac, and other stakeholders also shared their experiences in working with IWWs and provided recommendations on capacity building and updates to the current environmental protection policies for unlocking the potential of digitalization in the waste management system of Vietnam and contributing to national metrics on waste collection and segregation. Digital innovations targeting IWWs can provide an accessible platform for training, a marketplace, and a connection with waste buyers. In addition, companies can use digital apps to collaborate with other impact projects to drive emerging markets for responsible sourcing throughout the plastic waste supply chain, taking into account social and environmental considerations in managing partnerships with suppliers.
