In February 2022, the resumed fifth session of UNEA (UNEA 5.2) adopted a resolution, backed by 175 countries, to forge an “international, legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution” (UNEA Resolution 5/14). The plastic treaty is expected to address the full lifecycle of plastics, including production, design, and disposal. The intergovernmental negotiating committee (INC) planned to take place over 2.5 years, starting from November 2022 (INC1) and ending in 2024 (INC5) with the agreement expected to be tabled for adoption in 2025.
